Strengthening the Throat Chakra

What is it?

In the last few decades, Chakras have become a part of popular culture. Many people reference the colors, imagery, and feelings related to these energy hubs in their daily lives. There are seven chakras in the human body, and five more outside, making up the 12 major chakras.

The Throat Chakra is located in the center of your neck, or at your throat. This chakra is obviously connected to speaking, chanting, and singing. It is also connected to creativity and self-expression. The throat chakra is associated with the neck, thyroid, esophagus, teeth, mouth, and ears. The throat and thyroid are where we give life to our emotions, intentions, praise, and criticism. As you can imagine, the throat chakra is often blamed for our food, beverage, and illegal substance addictions, and it is fair.

Visibility

How does the throat chakra show up in other organisms? Without a brain, can I have self-expression?

Photos left to right, top to bottom:

  1. Elephants: elephants constantly communicate with each other. Here’s an article to learn more.
  2. Whales: whales are also constantly in communication with each other and their young.
  3. Tree frogs: frogs communicate about territory, food, danger and more.
  4. Crickets: Have you ever read The Cricket in Times Square. Highly recommend it!
  5. Toadfish: toadfish actually SING! And you can hear them out of the water.
  6. Bioluminescence: bioluminescence is a chemical form of communication. While it is not intentional, it still serves the purpose of communication and protection from predators.

As mentioned in previous writings, the Earth itself has a chakra system. The Throat Chakra for the planet as a whole is located at The Great Pyramids of Giza. We will talk more about that in a bit.

Unbalanced

So how will I know it’s my throat chakra that is unbalanced and not my solar plexus chakra or one of the other chakras?

The most obvious sign the throat chakra is blocked is struggling to find your words and/or speak. Do you feel nervous about expressing yourself? Do you think no one will understand? Do you stand up for yourself verbally or do you shrink away to avoid conflict? I will be honest and vulnerable here, I may have answered yes to more than one of those.

There are physical signs as well. These include laryngitis, sore throats, some breathing issues, dizziness (ears), fatigue, and even anemia.

Our pets might show an imbalance in their throat chakra through communication. They may be meowing or barking or even whining more than usual. They also may not be listening. Our pets have similar neck organs to ours, so they can have similar issues.

Even Earth is showing an imbalance in her Throat Chakra. Groundwater levels are rising at the Great Pyramids and the facilities, quite frankly, are just old. Beginning in 2019, it became illegal to even climb the pyramids. Mount Olives Jerusalem is also part of the Earth’s throat chakra, and it is currently in the conflict between Israel and Palestine. Each nation feels it should have control over the area, and Arabs have been known to desecrate gravesites.

Balancing

How can we begin to balance out all of this imbalance?

As humans, we have many different ways to heal our own chakras, especially the Throat chakra.

Affirmations

One way to work on balancing out energy in the body is through affirmations. For the throat chakra, we want affirmations that address the challenges for the chakra itself:

  • I communicate confidently and with ease
  • I can communicate freely
  • I take time to listen and speak the truth
  • I have clear boundaries
  • Good things and words come from me

Activities

In addition to affirmations, other physical activities will support balancing our throat chakra. These include but are not exclusive to:

  • Hydrate. Our throat needs water.
  • Sing! Sing in the shower. Sing in the car. Sing anywhere you are allowed – yes, even if you are tone-deaf.
  • Call someone and talk or just talk to yourself in the mirror.
  • Read something out loud – even the shampoo bottle will work.
  • Write down what you want to say.
  • Sit in silence.

Balancing the throat chakra enables us to transition and work on another chakra. This becomes useful when we are ready to balance our chakras in pairs. The chakra most often paired with the Throat Chakra, for healing purposes, is the Sacral Chakra. The Sacral Chakra is the center of creativity and birth. When it is healthy, an equally healthy Throat Chakra enables us to share, share, share.

Once our Throat Chakra is balanced, we can begin strengthening it. This can be done through activities such as:

  • Breathing exercises.
  • Practice hearing more and not just listening to respond.
  • Develop those hobbies – create, create, create!
  • Let go of the things you cannot control.
  • Yoga exercises for the throat chakra.
  • Embrace the blue.
  • Embrace blue crystals such as turquoise, aquamarine, lapis lazuli, and sodalite.
  • Eat/use blueberries, honey, tea, and lemon.

Impact

Imagine a world where everyone’s Throat Chakra was open and balanced. What would it look like?

WE ARE EXPRESSIVE.

What does that look like? I suspect many people think they are being expressive right now. But are they truly using their throat chakra? Are they listening as well as speaking? Expression is not about putting YOUR voice out there. Expression is considerate. Expression considers the ecosystem, you know, other people.

Take a few moments, and jot down what you think a balanced expressive world would look like. If you feel inclined, comment here and share. Personally, I have no idea what it would look like. I will need to sit in it for a bit and think about it.

Strengthening the Solar Plexus Chakra

What is it?

In the last few decades, Chakras have become a part of popular culture. Many people reference the colors, imagery, and feelings related to these energy hubs in their daily lives. There are seven chakras in the human body, and five more outside, making up the 12 major chakras. Each chakra has its own characteristics, and some people may exhibit one chakra more than another.

The Solar Plexus Chakra is located approximately where our diaphragm is. It connects our sacral and throat chakras and is characterized by the expression of will, personal power, and mental abilities. You may have heard of Abraham Maslow and his Hierarchy of Needs. In regards to educating adolescents, Maslow’s hierarchy supports that adolescents must have their basic needs met before they can begin to do any higher-level processing. The same applies to your personal system of chakras. We discussed in Strengthening Your Sacral Chakra that by providing that strengthened sense of love and relationship we would be able to support our sacral chakra enough to progress to the next chakra, the Solar Plexus. And still following Maslow, the next step is to work on our feelings of accomplishment. I continue to be in awe of how Maslow built his pyramid in a way that mirrors the chakras.

Visibility

The Solar Plexus Chakra is not only our center of expression of personal power but really is about making decisions and taking responsibility. Some examples of the Solar Plexus chakra energy in action:

  1. I am Possible
  2. Direction
  3. Self-image
  4. Power

As mentioned before, Earth also has a chakra system. It is widely believed Earth’s Solar Plexus chakra can be found in Australia, at Uluru and Kata Tjuta.

Unbalanced

So how will I know it’s my solar plexus chakra that is unbalanced and not my heart chakra or one of the other chakras?

The most obvious sign of a solar plexus blockage is an overall lack of self-esteem or inability to make decisions. This may look like shyness. The most obvious sign of an overactive solar plexus is a manipulative or over-controlling person. There are many other indicators and variations of those included in the image to the right.

Our pets might show an imbalance in their solar plexus chakra by excessively herding the other pets (or humans), digestive issues, or even excessive barking.

Plants show an imbalance in their solar plexus when they fail to transport nutrients from the leaves to the rest of the plant.

Even Earth is showing an imbalance in her solar plexus chakra. A balanced Earth Solar Plexus chakra would result in an overall feeling of peace and everyone in their place. Unfortunately, only a small, small percentage of us feel that balance. For the rest of Earth, our suicide rates are up (the #3 cause of death), and people, in general, don’t seem to like themselves. Then there’s all the war and conflict. Those folks have overactive solar plexus chakras. There’s definitely a MAJOR imbalance.

Balancing

How can we begin to balance out all of this imbalance?

As humans, we have many different ways to heal our own chakras, especially the solar plexus chakra.

Affirmations

One way to work on adjusting energy in the body is through affirmations. For the solar plexus chakra, we want affirmations that address the challenges for the chakra itself:

  • I am strong, powerful, and confident.
  • I am aligned with my purpose.
  • I am enough, just as I am.
  • I confidently welcome new experiences.
  • I know my value and will not lessen or shrink myself for anything or anyone.
  • I am fearless in the pursuit of what sets my soul on fire.
  • I am worthy of respect from myself and others.
  • I love the person I am, both inside and out.
  • I am perfect, whole, and complete.
  • I can accomplish incredible things.

Activities

In addition to affirmations, other physical activities will support balancing and strengthening our solar plexus chakra. These include but are not exclusive to:

  • Add more yellow to your life
  • Eat more yellow foods: bananas, corn, yellow curry, yellow bell peppers, pineapple, lemon in your water
  • Strengthen your core through exercise and fitness.
  • Improve your diet by listening to your gut.
  • Practice breathing exercises and meditation.
  • Tap into crystal energy: citrine, amber, tiger’s eye, calcite, yellow tourmaline, topaz.
  • Tap into essential oils: sandalwood, lemongrass, myrrh, and peppermint.

Impact

Imagine a world where everyone’s Solar Plexus Chakra was open and balanced. What would it look like?

WE ARE STRONG.

What does that look like? Begin with defining your power. Do something new. Have a little fun and shuck those fears and anxieties.

What would the surface of the Earth look like if it’s Solar Plexus Chakra was balanced? For Earth, a healthy Solar Plexus energy hub would mean the empowerment of the collective, and maybe even a balance of power across the globe. Wouldn’t that be wonderful?

Strengthening the Sacral Chakra

The Sacral Chakra is located below the belly button, in the area we tend to think of as our sexual center. It connects our root and solar plexus chakras, and it provides us with that feeling of creativity, intimacy, and overall joy about life. You may have heard of Abraham Maslow and his Hierarchy of Needs. In regards to educating adolescents, Maslow’s hierarchy supports that adolescents must have their basic needs met before they can begin to do any higher-level processing. The same applies to your personal system of chakras. We discussed in Strengthening Your Root Chakra that by providing that strengthened sense of security/safety, one could move on and work on the next chakra. Usually, that’s the Sacral. And still following Maslow, the next step is to feel loved and have a relationship with someone else that matters. I’m in awe of how Maslow built his pyramid in a way that mirrors the chakras.

Visibility

The Sacral Chakra is not only our center of self-expression but really is about having fun and enjoying the wonder of life. Some examples of Sacral chakra energy in action:

  1. An expectant mother
  2. Some art/craft supplies
  3. Several women dancing
  4. Someone writing

As mentioned before, Earth also has a chakra system. It is widely believed Earth’s Sacral chakra can be found at Lake Titicaca between Bolivia/Peru.

Unbalanced

So how will I know it’s my sacral chakra that is unbalanced and not my throat chakra or one of the other chakras?

The most obvious sign of a sacral blockage is an overall uninspired approach to life. This may look like laziness or depression. The most obvious sign of an overactive sacral is addiction or substance abuse. There are many other indicators and variations of those included in the image to the right.

Our pets might show an imbalance in their sacral chakra by excessively laying around (more than usual), eating food non-stop (they need a timer), or maybe even humping everyone’s leg.

Plants show an imbalance in their sacral when they fail to reproduce or even flower (plants often display both male and female parts).

Even Earth is showing an imbalance in her Sacral Chakra. A balanced Earth Sacral chakra would result in an overall feeling of joy and would create a drive for more adventure. Unfortunately, only a small, small percentage of us feel that balance. For the rest of Earth, our suicide rates are up (#3 cause of death) and so are our homicide rates (#2). Birth rates are down. Schools are experiencing a lack of funding so they are shutting down the creative programs again. There’s an imbalance.

Balancing

How can we begin to balance out all of this imbalance?

As humans, we have many different ways to heal our own chakras, especially the sacral chakra.

Affirmations

One way to work on adjusting energy in the body is through affirmations. For the sacral chakra, we want affirmations that address the challenges for the chakra itself:

  • I am creative.
  • I love my body.
  • I am sensual and can be intimate with others without feeling shame.
  • _____ inspires me.
  • I know my place in the greater world.
  • I release my need for distractions because I love my life as it is.
  • I react appropriately to each situation.
  • I do not need drama in my life. I need peace.
  • My identity is based on ME and me only.

Activities

In addition to affirmations, other physical activities will support balancing and strengthening our sacral chakra. These include but are not exclusive to:

  • Add more orange to your life
  • Eat more orange-colored, protein-rich, high-water-content foods
  • Be creative: dance, play, draw, write
  • Go swimming or to the beach
  • Meditate to help with self-expression (control of emotions)
  • Use Yoga to open up those hips
  • Tap into crystal energy: carnelian, tiger-eye, orange calcite
  • Tap into essential oils: jasmine, sandalwood, ylang-ylang, sweet orange, and rose

Impact

Imagine a world where everyone’s Sacral Chakra was open and balanced. What would it look like?

WE ARE CREATORS.

What does that look like? Begin with creating your own joy. Do something silly. Have a little fun.

What would the surface of the Earth look like if it’s Sacral Chakra was balanced? For Earth, a healthy Sacral energy hub would mean the creation of life. The creation of life equals evolution to this science teacher, and isn’t the entire purpose of any being on Earth to evolve into something better? Even Maslow knew that.

Special 3 Card Reading

We started Chakra II today and almost everyone has a blocked or sluggish root chakra. So I started wondering: why does everyone feel so unsafe? I mean, look around us? It’s obvious the world feels unsafe. So this reading, all parts, applies to everyone.

For YOU

Want: We all have wants and needs. Our ego focuses on “want” but spiritually it should be “need.” We are out of balance. This causes distress.

Help someone else

Feel: We cannot ignore our feelings and we are stuck in a feeling of fear. But we inherently crave joy. So find the joy!! Ignore the fear.

Remember/Watch for

None: Watch out for that lack mentality. It comes with an awful inner script. Find the positives. Look for the joy. It really is already there. We just have to see it. Only then will we be able to find balance between our wants and needs.

Strengthening the Heart Chakra

What is it?

In the last few decades, Chakras have become a part of popular culture. Many people reference the colors, imagery, and feelings related to these energy hubs in their daily lives. There are seven chakras in the human body, and five more outside, making up the 12 major chakras. There are more, but that’s a lesson for a much later date.
The 4th Chakra is the Heart Chakra and is naturally associated with air (lungs in your chest). It is located in the center of the chest and allows us to feel deeply connected with others. A finely tuned Heart Chakra allows us to appreciate the harmonious exchange of energy with all that is around us, as well as the beauty and wonder of life.
The Heart Chakra is associated with:

  • Our feelings for ourselves and others
  • How we relate with and to others
  • Our levels of compassion, empathy, forgiveness, and acceptance

Visibility

The Heart Chakra, in my opinion, is a projection of how we want to be seen in the world. We crave love and attention, yes, even those of you who are hermits crave love.

There’s a phrase, that I feel speaks directly to the heart chakra, many of you may have been told you wear them…rose-colored glasses. I have a pair! I used to have several, but I allowed someone to convince me they were silly once, so I tossed them. In my path to healing, I recognized I needed to pick them back up. See, we all need rose-colored glasses. Not because we want to be like an ostrich and bury our heads in the sand, but because we want to see all the beauty the world has to offer. Sometimes, we need the “rose” to filter out the bad things happening. Not to deny they exist, but to keep them from overwhelming our fragile egos and shaking our steady grounding.

One of my favorite people in the universe, my sister-in-law, looks for hearts everywhere she goes. She posts photos of hearts made out of oil spills on the driveway, or a random leaf she finds. They are never created by her, merely discovered. Personally, I believe she manifests them. But that’s another topic for another day.

What if we each took the next seven days (a whole week) to tune into our hearts? What do you think you will see, hear, feel, smell, and maybe even taste? Are you in tune with that feeling?

We discussed in Strengthening the Root Chakra, that Earth has chakras too. First, let me just mention that Earth is the word heart with the letters rearranged.

That’s not coincidental friends. The energies from the Earth’s Heart Chakra influence our overall feeling of love for and in the Universe. Earth’s Heart Chakra is found at Glastonbury/Shaftesbury/Stonehenge. Check out this

map! I may be trying too hard, but I swear I see a heart. Maybe back in the day, before modern roads, the old dirt roads were in the shape of a heart.

Unbalanced

So how will I know it’s my heart chakra that is unbalanced and not my Solar Plexus chakra or one of the other chakras? You can take a short quiz here.

The most obvious sign the Heart Chakra is blocked is an overall inability to play well with others. Someone may need constant feedback/reinforcement or even become reclusive due to fear of intimacy. Someone might be overly defensive, jealous, or blame others. They may also have difficulty showing or giving forgiveness.

Plants show an imbalance in their Heart Chakra when they begin to lose their beautiful green color.

Even Earth is showing an imbalance in her Heart Chakra. We are so busy loving the wrong things that road construction/expansion threatens Stonehenge as it stands today. Just do a little Google search and follow the debates. It’s disheartening.

Balancing

How can we begin to balance out all of this imbalance?

As humans, we have many different ways to heal our own chakras, especially the heart chakra.

Affirmations

One way to work on balancing out energy in the body is through affirmations. For the Heart Chakra, we want affirmations that address the challenges for the chakra itself:

  • I will be gracious, and inclusive and let others have their own ideas.
  • I will cooperate and prioritize relationships.
  • I will please myself because I matter.
  • I understand everyone is doing the best they can with what they have at the time.
  • I enjoy being with my friends and loved ones.
  • I forgive myself and others.

Activities

In addition to affirmations, other physical activities will support balancing our Heart Chakra. These include but are not exclusive to:

  • Use breathing exercises to help engage your Heart Chakra.
  • Spend three minutes each day appreciating something because it is beautiful. This can be nature, music, a touching moment, a commercial, anything.
  • Show yourself some love through self-care. Take a bath, do a meditation or even practice yoga.
  • Practice giving yourself grace.

Balancing the Heart Chakra enables us to transition and work on another chakra, and the Crown Chakra is a logical next step. More on that in another article.

Sometimes, it helps to balance our chakras in pairs. The chakra most often paired with the Heart Chakra, for healing purposes, is the Root Chakra. The feeling of security that a properly balanced Root chakra provides reflects on the generosity and compassion that you feel when the Heart chakra is properly aligned.

As mentioned in Strengthening the Root Chakra, it is believed that the Root Chakra and Crown Chakra act in a yin/yang-type manner. The Root chakra is about individual physical existence in this time and place. The Crown Chakra is our connection to higher consciousness. The Heart Chakra is the balance between the two. What a beautiful trio.

Once our Heart Chakra is balanced, we can begin strengthening it. This can be done through activities such as:

  • Agree to disagree. We need multiple perspectives in our lives, even the ones we disagree with.
  • Use journaling to strengthen your voice. Reading it out loud will help you hear your feelings.
  • Find someone whom you can talk to without watching your words. We need to get the negative thoughts out and cultivate the positive.
  • Speak from your heart and practice saying, “I feel…”
  • Meditate. Concentrating on breath supports your body’s cells.

Impact

Imagine a world where everyone’s Heart Chakra was open and balanced.

WE ARE LOVED.

What does that…

…look like?

…sound like?

…feel like?

…smell like?

…taste like?

What would the surface of the Earth look like if its Heart Chakra was balanced?

Strengthening the Root Chakra

The Root Chakra is located at the base of the spine. It connects us to Earth and all of the other “life energies.” It reflects our feelings of safety and security. You may have heard of Abraham Maslow and his Hierarchy of Needs. In regards to educating adolescents, Maslow’s hierarchy supports that adolescents must have their basic needs met before they can begin to do any higher-level processing. The same applies to your personal system of chakras. Before you can do real work on those chakras, one must do the work on the root chakra in order to feel safe and one day is able to leave the state of fight or flight.

Visibility

The Root Chakra is not only our base, but it seems to be the base of many

“life energies” on our little planet. When we take the simple pattern of the root structure, we can find it in many different places on Earth. Each of these “roots” grounds and nourishes their respective systems.

Photos left to right, top to bottom:

  1. Tree root system: anchors tree to the ground, delivers water and nutrients to cells of the tree.
  2. Jellyfish tentacles: specialized cells designed to find and bring in nutrients.
  3. Fungi mycelium: specialized cells designed to breakdown and transport nutrients to fungal cells
  4. Colorado river delta: materials are eroded by water and carried into the river where it feeds life specialized to live in the area where freshwater and saltwater mix.
  5. Animal vascular systems (human shown here): carry nutrients to and from the cells and organs of the organism
  6. Human lungs: bring oxygen into the body and carbon dioxide out, connect with the cardiovascular system to carry to cells and organs.

The Earth itself has a chakra system. The Root Chakra for the planet as a whole is located at Mt Shasta in California. We will talk more about that in a bit.

Unbalanced

So how will I know it’s my root chakra that is unbalanced and not my sacral chakra or one of the other chakras? You can take a short quiz here.

The most obvious sign the root chakra is blocked is living in fear or survival mode. Someone might also be excessively negative or cynical. They might have a compulsion to hoard, this may be things, money, or even food. And finally, they may not have a clear grip on reality – they think they are the best at everything.

Our pets might show an imbalance in their root chakra by tearing up the couch cushions when we leave, having accidents, or excessive eating.

Plants show an imbalance in their roots when they fall over, begin to wither, or their leaves change colors unexpectedly.

Even Earth is showing an imbalance in her Root Chakra. Fires are consuming the area around Mt Shasta at an alarming rate and there doesn’t seem to be a sign of stopping. Thousands are obsessed with firearms and personal protection. Nations are constantly at war. Refugees flee nations at alarming rates. So many are in a constant state of fight or flight.

Balancing

How can we begin to balance out all of this imbalance?

As humans, we have many different ways to heal our own chakras, especially the root chakra.

Affirmations

One way to work on balancing out energy in the body is through affirmations. For the root chakra, we want affirmations that address the challenges for the chakra itself:

  • I am in control and safe.
  • I will let go of attachment to results and things.
  • I will remember to relax and enjoy Life’s activities.
  • I will Quiet my negative inner dialogue.
  • I will slow down and be methodical.
  • I will be flexible without lowering my standards.
  • I am the navigator of my life.
  • I will change. Changes will strengthen my base, not deplete it.
  • I will listen to others without inserting myself.

Activities

In addition to affirmations, other physical activities will support balancing our root chakra. These include but are not exclusive to:

  • Connecting with nature
  • Gardening
  • Cooking healthy meals
  • Surrounding yourself in Earth toned colors
  • Meditating
  • Performing yoga
  • Walking, running, and/or dancing
  • Eating red fruits and vegetables
  • Employing crystals: jaspers, smoky quartz, hematite, garnet
  • Diffusing essential oils: sandalwood and frankincense

Balancing the root chakra enables us to transition and work on another chakra, and the Sacral Chakra is a logical next step. More on that in another article.

Sometimes, it helps to balance our chakras in pairs. The chakra most often paired with the Root Chakra, for healing purposes, is the Heart Chakra. The feeling of security that a properly balanced Root chakra provides reflects on the generosity and compassion that you feel when the Heart chakra is properly aligned.

It is believed that the Root Chakra and Crown Chakra act in a yin/yang type manner. The Root chakra is about individual physical existence in this time and place. The Crown Chakra is our connection to higher consciousness. The Heart Chakra is the balance between the two. What a beautiful trio.

Once our root chakra is balanced, we can begin strengthening it. This can be done through activities such as:

  • Embracing “the struggle” as an opportunity for growth and change.
  • Listening to others with sympathy in your heart, while detaching from the emotion.
  • Do nothing. Yes, that’s what I said. Relax and enjoy the moment.
  • Acting on impulse every 6 to 8 weeks and complete the task you start.
  • Practicing saying: “I need your help.” “I like the way you do that.” “Will you teach me?”
  • Learning about others’ philosophies and personal tastes by discussing them with them.
  • Letting go of attachments.
  • Finding a nice patch of grass and practice Easy Pose or walk barefoot and feel the life energy under your feet.

Impact

Imagine a world where everyone’s Root Chakra was open and balanced. What would it look like?

WE ARE SAFE.

What does that look like? My picture of “safe” is nothing like others. To me, it’s the safety to struggle without being made fun of. Safety to feel sympathy but not have to jump on the bandwagon. Safety to be non-responsive. Safety to finish a task that you impulsively started. Safety to show vulnerability. Safety to learn about other people and cultures. Safety to release attachments, especially those that no longer serve. Safety to just sit in the grass or walk barefoot. Safety to just be.

Each of the items above contributes to my feeling of safety. I feel so safe, I do not need to own a weapon like others feel the need. I believe an individual’s need to own a weapon for safety infringes on their neighbor’s right to feel safe without the weapon. It’s an awful cycle that needs to stop.

What would the surface of the Earth look like if its Root Chakra was balanced? Fewer fires? There are dozens of fires in the area surrounding Mt. Shasta each year. More appreciation of natural preserves? More preservation of natural resources? Appreciating the Earth? Artifacts exist showing we were once more collectively balanced.  Less war? Less reacting to others? I can only imagine what we could accomplish if we were all on the same frequency again.
